We're not at all partial to Australian Shiraz (Syrah), but we make a huge exception when it comes to Penfolds' Bin 28, a wine that may be the most undervalued of its type on the planet. From Penfolds' old vine plot of Kalimna, purchased in 1945, this is a Shiraz that touches all the traditional and modern touchstones for the grape: dense, raspberry fruits, followed by spice box, roasted game bird, hints of garrigue and a long, refreshing finish that puts it above the pack of typical jammy, goopy Australian offerings. Many refer to this as "baby Grange", and we'd be hard-pressed to argue the point...and at around 10% of the price of the unfindable, super-luxe Grange Hermitage, this is our go-to Penfolds red. Sustainable farming.
