Lovers of Valtellina wine often find Sforzato to be the ultimate expression of Alpine Nebbiolo, as the vinification features the addition of a percentage of clusters of air-dried Nebbiolo. However, unlike Amarone, the dried fruit doesn't become the dominant element in the wine; instead, it seems to simply concentrate flavor and add intensity and typicity to the aroma. Case in point: this 2018 Ronco del Picchio simply stuns with its camphor/castor/tar qualities! Although we're tempted to serve it as a vino di meditazione- almost separate from a festive meal- the overriding impulse is to serve it with a grand main course, much as we would a top Barolo.
