Michèle Aubèry-Laurent & Maxime François Laurent operate in the northernmost reaches of the southern Rhône Valley, crafting unmanipulated, complex and lavish wines. Their vineyards are at about 350 meters' altitude, situated along a limestone ridge that was an ancient Mediterranean shore. Although their main red grape is the Grenache traditional to this region, their 100% Syrah cuvée, the Sierra du Sud, is a lip-smacking delight of dark blue and black fruits, Provençal herbaceousness, olive and cured meats. In a hotter, lesser site, this sort of wine could be a hot, alcoholic mess, but the cool nights at this altitude infuse the wine with a freshness and balance that makes it extraordinary!
