Here's a fresh and balanced Portuguese red from the country's most exciting and critically-lauded winegrower, António Maçanita, and his winery in the hills of Alentejo, Fitapreta. Maçanita's "A Touriga Vai Nua" (translated: Touriga Goes Naked) shows his genius in taking Touriga Nacional- a grape that normally veers toward high alcohol and an almost jammy quality on the palate- and using the cold nights afforded his vineyards in Alentejo to preserve fruit, acidity and freshness in a bottling that comes in at moderate 13% alcohol. The genius stroke here is that even though this unoaked wine isn't your typical Touriga Nacional blockbuster, the boysenberry, anise, rose petal and white pepper aromas and flavors of the grape still inform the wine in an elegant and food-friendly manner.
If you're a TFWR regular, you know that we go crazy over wines that offer satisfaction and complexity without the unwanted distractions of new oak, over-extraction and high alcohol. This selection ticks all our boxes!
