Luis Seabra is widely considered to be the most ambitious (and successful) of the "new wave" of Portuguese winemakers working in the high elevations of the Cima Corgo subzone of the Douro appellation. His "Ilimitado" wines are meant to be rough equivalents of the "Villages" wines of Burgundy, in that they blend different parcels into expressions of the mica schist soils that underlie the best vineyards of the Douro. The 2020 Xisto Ilimitado Tinto is 30% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Amarela, 20% Tinta Roriz, 10% Rufete, 10% Tinta Barroca, 5% Malvasia Preta, 5% Donzelinho Tinto. The grapes hail from 40-60 year old vines at 400-600 m (1,232 -1,968 ft) elevation. 70% of this cuvée is fermented in vat, and 30% is done in stone lagar (with pigeage, a manual breakup of "hotspots" for more even fermentation). The result is a lively, high-toned and aromatic mélange of red and blue fruits, with underlying currents of white pepper, herbs and minerals.
