Ry Richards, the longtime assistant winemaker at Chappellet, fashions this classic Napa Cab from prime fruit sourced from well-drained plots on the eastern side of the valley. What amazes us year after year is the exceptional freshness Richards achieves with selected barrels that would yield thick, chonky, high-octane Napa red in the hands of a less confident winemaker. You get all the requisite blue/black fruits and fine dusty tannins, but it's balanced, relaxed and not trying to impress with sheer power. That it comes in at the under-$40 mark makes this wine one of TFWR's perennial best values!
