Judith Beck could be Austria's most under-the-radar star winegrower. From the time she took over her family's winery in 2004, the trajectory of improvements in both winery and vineyard have been impressive, with a full adoption of biodynamics as the guiding principle for all winemaking decisions. The warm eastern region of Burgenland is renowned for yielding rich, dark Blaufränkisch, and the 30 year-old vines of Altenberg do not disappoint. If you've never had a chance to experience the greatness of this grape variety, you'll be shocked at the pure class on display here. It's not unlike a great bottle of Pichon-Lalande or Pontet-Canet in terms of structure and amplitude.
