Prince Alessandrojacopo Boncompagna Ludovisi oversees one of Europe's most astonishing estates, the Tenuta di Fiorano, which lies between the Alban Hills and the Appian Way, not far from Rome. Their flagship wine, the Fiorano Rosso, is one of Italy's pioneering blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and it issues from 70-80 year old vines planted to volcanic soils. The estate's 2015 is just rounding into drinkability, and it's a pure, refined and exquisitely balanced wine that impresses through its transparency and old-vine intensity more than through the application of fancy cellar practices, of which there are none. The wines coming from Tenuta di Fiorano remain largely unchanged from what they were just after WW2, when Prince Alberico, the estate's founder, was assisted by both Tancredi Biondi-Santi and Luigi Veronelli in establishing this as one of Europe's great wine estates. Organic and vegan.
