Mount Eden Vineyards is arguably California's flagship winery when it comes to Chardonnay, and its entry-level wine, hailing from the historic Wolff Vineyard, offers compelling proof. This shy-yielding plot (just two to four tons per acre!), planted in 1976, results in a wine of remarkable concentration and nuance...something unheard of in this category. Of course, it's completely barrel-fermented, goes through a full malolatic fermentation and is aged in older barrels for eight months, making it one heck of a wine for well under $40.
