Architect Javier Arizcuren is at the forefront of a new movement in Rioja to create wines of place rather than the oaky, overly rich, homogeneous wines of the past that emphasize a house style rather than precise interpretations of vineyard and vintage. Located in Rioja Baja, his extremely old bush-vine plots (many vines are well over 100 years old) range from 1700'-2600' in altitude; the Monte Gatún cuvée is 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo from north-facing vineyards at 2000’ elevation. The three varieties are fermented spontaneously and separately, and the assemblage is aged for 12 months mostly in concrete, with 30% put into neutral Slavonian oak. The result is a Rioja redolent of wild berries, fig compote and lavender, with superfine tannins. Organic.
