If you're a lover of traditional old vines California reds, chances are you're quite familiar with Morgan Peterson, proprietor of Bedrock Wine Company. His Zinfandels are legendary, rare and rapidly escalating in price. What you may not know is that Peterson's "second" wine, Shebang, is a bargain-priced blend of old-vines varieties that hail from all over Northern California. Though Zinfandel informs the structure and primary aromas and flavors, there's Alicante, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Black Malvasia and probably several other varieties in this, his 16th bottling. The non-vintage (really multi-vintage) concept behind this wine allows Peterson to pick and choose from the best barrels of whatever he has on hand whenever market demand dictates the need to produce new bottlings.
